この前、藤圭子さんのシングル「冷たい月／ゴールデンエラ」を中古で入手した。1996年に出されたこの二曲には、Cubic Uとして13歳？の宇多田ヒカルが参加している。以前からYouTubeとかでこっそり聴いたことは幾度となくあったけれど、8cmCDはなかなか入手できていなかった。ようやくちゃんとした音源が手に入ったので改めてよく聴いている。
二曲とも作詞作曲はRa. U（＝藤圭子）・Sking U（＝宇多田照實）、編曲は宮川彬良。
どちらも好きだ。圭子さんのボーカルは言わずもがな絶品。深みのある歌声が良い。13歳のヒカルの声はまだ幼いが、随所に見られるフェイクの巧さは流石だなと。そして、新アルバム「BADモード」収録の「気分じゃないの (Not In The Mood)」終盤に登場するヒカルの息子くんの歌声とよく似ている。ああ親子だなと思った。また、「ゴールデン・エラ」は「ヘイ、貴方と同じ時代を生きてる」などというように文頭に「ヘイ」が付いているが、これがFace My Fearsの「ねえ」と似ていて面白いなと思った。これはこじつけだけれど。
「冷たい月」には「冷たい月に打たれて咲いた花の命の雫が光る」という歌詞が出てくるけれど、これは娘の光への思いもあるのかな。
「気分じゃないの (Not In The Mood)」を初めて聴いた時は、息子くんの歌声に神々しさのようなものを感じた。何と、英語インタビューによると、この部分は彼自身のアイデアらしい。すごい。かつてのヒカルもこんな風に歌ってたのかな。

On “Not in the Mood,” is the little voice there… your son?
Yeah. It’s my son. I was working on the track at home in this room, and he just walked in and sat on my lap and I said, “You want to listen?” He was listening to it, and said, “Oh, how about this?” And he began singing his idea. I was like, “Oh yeah, that’s good. You want to put that down?” And he stood on my chair, sang into the mic properly with headphones on. It was really nice, so it made it into the song. I didn’t use it just because it’s my son. I told him “I can’t promise you it’ll be in the song, but it might make it.” When I played him the final product, I was like, “See? You sound amazing. You’re in the end. It’s the best part.” He’s like, “Yeah. I think that my part should be more in the other choruses too, like an echo to your singing.”
Wow! So he’s got the musical ear already.
Yeah. He has ideas. I love that he’s fearless, and that he’s confident and expressing himself.
